Every ounce of speed you build in the backswing has to get delivered somewhere — that delivery moment is the release. It's not just "when your wrists uncock." It's the last link in a chain that starts at your feet and ends at the ball, and it's usually where a well-built swing either cashes in on its speed or leaks it away in the final few inches.
Most golfers try to fix the release by thinking about their hands. But the hands are the last thing to move — they're simply reporting what happened earlier in the chain. That's why this guide walks through the release as three checkpoints, in the order your body actually uses them, instead of one isolated hand move.

Each part hands off speed to the next like a whip cracking — your hips slow down so your torso can speed up, your torso slows down so your arms can speed up, and by the time the club arrives at the ball, it's moving faster than anything else in the swing. That's the goal every time: the club should still be gaining speed as it reaches the ball, not before.
When that order breaks — most commonly when the arms and hands take over early because the hips and torso didn't lead — the club runs out of speed to gain before it even gets to the ball. That's what an early release, or "casting," actually is: your hands trying to create speed the rest of your body didn't hand off to them.
The mirror pause test: Take a slow-motion practice swing and freeze the moment your hands reach hip-height on the downswing. Look in a mirror or check a video.
Before your arms or hands do anything, your body should already be pushing against the ground. Think of it like a small vertical jump timed to the start of your downswing: you settle down slightly into your transition, then drive up and rotate against the ground as you swing through. Players who hit it far aren't just swinging harder with their arms — they're using the ground to build speed before the club ever starts moving.
Skip this step and your body has to make up the missing power somewhere else — usually with extra hand and arm effort, which is the same early-release pattern from Checkpoint One. This is also why a driver swing should feel different from a wedge swing: driver swings ask far more of the ground.
The flat-footed swing test: Make three full practice swings trying to keep both feet glued flat to the ground the entire time. Then make three more swings allowing your feet and lower body to move naturally.
By the time the club reaches the ball, your lead wrist should be flat or very slightly bowed — not breaking down or "cupping." A cupped or flipped lead wrist opens the clubface, which is the classic amateur move to try to square a face that's arriving open. It feels like extra effort, but it actually costs you both speed and consistency.
Here's the part most golfers get backwards: your trail hand is what should feel active and fast through impact — not your lead wrist. Your lead side's job late in the downswing is to stay stable and hold its angle, while your trail hand and forearm do the work of squaring the face. If you're consciously trying to "flip the club through" with your lead hand, you're fighting your own swing.
The impact-position freeze: Take a slow-motion swing and freeze right at the point where the club would strike the ball. Check your lead wrist in a mirror or on video.
You've just run through three self-checks. Tally which checkpoints showed a flag — that tells you where to focus first.
It's tempting to jump straight to speed training or a release drill. But if a physical restriction — tight hips, a limited mid-back turn, a weak glute — is what's actually blocking the sequence, drilling the release just grooves the compensation at higher speed. This is the order that actually builds a release that holds up on the course.
